I have heard (I hope wrongly) that the men bringing the washed gravel for the Bell Lock, finding the boat too deep when in the tunnel, actually threw a quantity overboard between 9th and 10th pit. Mr Hill’s small boat worked by J Mitchell had some difficulty passing it, so a fully laden boat could get stuck. Matter to be investigated.
